Evangelo’s Cocktail Lounge
Description
Evangelo's Cocktail Lounge was founded by a Greek immigrant who traveled all the way from Kefalonia, Greece searching for a better life at the early age of 16. Evangelo traveled all over the United States, migrating west until he finally settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the early 1930's. When the United States became involved in World War II, Evangelo signed up in hopes of avenging is family, who was believed to have perished by the hands of German Nazi soldiers.
For his service and bravery, Evangelo was granted citizenship and soon after settled down and opened Evangelos Cocktail Lounge in 1971. After Evangelo's death, famous photos of him soon emerged in the early 1990's by iconic photographer Eugene Smith being published by several national magazines, including Time Magazine. In 2002, the USPS published a stamp that included a photo of Evangelo drinking from a canteen.
