Carfax
Description
A legendary underground club and events space, Carfax first opened its doors in 1995 seeking to promote 'off the wall acts' that wouldn't normally get local airtime. After closing briefly in 2013, the club re-launched in early 2014 with an upgraded sound system and facilities, although the look and feel is still very much as it was - underground and gritty and run under the motto 'conceptual by nature'.
The location is a vast old warehouse in an industrial area of downtown Joburg whose walls are a favoured spot for local graffiti artists, and Carfax's neighbours on cobbled Gwi Gwi Mrwebi Street include wholesalers, car repair shops and artist studios. The club hosts music festivals with a focus on alternative and underground music and during festivals the adjoining cobbled streets are closed off to form an indoor-outdoor space with many stages.
In 2015 popular dance music brand & Club moved into their own dedicated club space adjoining Carfax and their regular club nights such as Toy Toy are among the most popular dance music parties in the city.
